In the realm of food today, the words ‘organic” and “gluten-free” have been really popular as food labels but are also largely misunderstood. Let’s begin with the term “organic”.

The term ‘gluten’ refers to proteins found in wheat, barley and rye. The common misconception lies in the belief that gluten is equivalent to wheat. While gluten is found in wheat, it is also found in other widely-used grains. Hence ‘wheat-free’ labelled food products may contain traces of gluten. Interestingly, some grains like quinoa, brown rice, and buckwheat are naturally free of gluten.
The gluten-free diet remains highly important for those with gluten-related disorders and allergies, one of which is commonly identified as coeliac disease. Many kids are diagnosed with it when they are between 6 months and 2 years old, which is when most kids get their first taste of gluten foods.
As coeliac disease is a chronic autoimmune disease, the only available treatment is to embark on a gluten-free diet. For most individuals, adhering to a gluten-free diet will stop symptoms associated with coeliac disease. Additionally, the healing of the small intestine will begin within weeks of the new diet and it will often completely heal within 6 to 18 months (dependent on a case-by-case basis).
The first step, or rather, the very foundation, of having a strong immune system is nutrition, and most times, a balanced, real food diet will do the trick at providing your child’s body with the nutrients it needs. Exposure to chemicals can damage the immune system and make it more difficult to fight off common infections and even more serious diseases such as cancer.
