Spotlight On… James Sanderson

Focus and simplicity. If only we were all like Steve Jobs and could achieve this in what we do. We talk to a man who has…James Sanderson, Founder of Boxchain-Moving tells School Notices all about what motivated him to start an international move business in Singapore.

How long have you lived in Singapore?

I’ve been in Asia for 9 years now, starting in Beijing and then moving to Singapore in 2012.

What did you do before Boxchain-Moving?

Life has always been about relocations! I have been in the moving business for 23 years in total and experienced life on the customer side as well when relocating from the UK to China and then onto Singapore.

What drove you to set up Boxchain-Moving?

As a family we have enjoyed life in Singapore from the moment we got here so we were keen to stay long term. This coupled with the fact that I have always wanted to run my own business meant that it was something I started to look at not long after we arrived. With extensive experience of working in, and understanding, the industry and all the players in it, what really drove me to was to set up and run a business where I could offer full control over a customer’s moving process and experience.

What has been your biggest challenge?

Building a brand in a competitive market.  But I’m very proud of the great progress we have made with this.

How as the market changed since you launched and how have you evolved the business accordingly?

If I take the 7 years I’ve been in Singapore (and my knowledge of the market even before I was on the ground), the international moving market has got smaller here. There are less moves in and out of Singapore. Along with this the larger relocation companies have taken a lot of the direct booked corporate work away from the movers over the last 10-20 years. Likewise, packages for people who are relocating have been cut back meaning they have to pay for moving themselves. Boxchain-Moving is geared up to exclusively deal with private moving customers.

What advice do you have for others starting their own business in Singapore?

It all depends on what pass / status someone has in Singapore. It’s quite easy to register the business but for foreigners (other than PR holders) there are a number of hurdles to establish a trading business. Always read the ACRA website first.

Do you have a motto by which you live your life and guide your business?

Yes and in fact it’s on our website! A quote from Steve Jobs as follows:

‘That’s been one of my mantras – focus and simplicity. Simple can be harder than complex: you have to work hard to get your thinking clean to make it simple’
