In our HEAD Space feature article series, we talk to the Heads of our Member Schools to find out what makes them tick at school and beyond. Today’s conversation is with Jayne Nadarajoo, the inspirational Founder of White Lodge International Preschool & Childcare
How long have you lived in Singapore? And what was your journey to being here?
I was born in Singapore and this is home for me. My great grandparents came from India many years ago and settled in this amazing country.
Who or what inspired you to work in Education?
I started work at an early age to contribute to the household income. My dad passed on when I was 11 years old so my siblings and I had to be responsible from a young age. I started my career as a part time teaching assistant and worked my way up to the role of Principal by the time I was 21. I enjoyed the independent role that allowed me to make teach creatively while gaining knowledge of best early childhood practises in the evenings. My work experience introduced me to a diverse community and internationalism as many students at my preschool were expatriates. I was in awe of the wonderful learning opportunities, facilities and quality of care that the international schools in Singapore provided to these families. So, when I had my children I was determine to provide them with a similar memorable preschool education that will set a strong foundation for lifelong learning.
‘Education is the most powerful weapon we can use to change the world ‘ – well said by Nelson Mandela. At 30 years of age, I started my first White Lodge preschool with my children as my inspiration.
What is your personal motto?
‘Be brave and not afraid of changes to make a difference’
If you could invite any three people to dinner, who would they be and why?
Firstly, I would invite my late friend Mimi who supported me with my work at White Lodge at the beginning as I know that she will be very proud of me! Plus, we will have lots of chat about the’ good old days’ and all the beautiful children we have met at White Lodge Linden Drive.
Second person: Dalai Lama. I am inspired by the teachings of Dalai Lama so it will be an honour to invite him home. He is the embodiment of hope for many and inspires me to be better, to make a difference and more.
The third person could be someone like Howard Gardner who is the Pioneer of Multiple Intelligences Theory. We will have intellectually stimulating conversations on his theory of multiple intelligences and how it has redefined educators’ views of how students learn and should be assessed.
Where do you take ‘out-of-towners’ as your must see/do destination in Singapore?
I like to take them to places like Chinatown, Little India, Malay Village etc as it showcases our diverse communities and rich cultural heritage in Singapore. Plus, they get to try our amazing local food in authentic settings.
